This Month in the Club Hub: Special Needs Club

American Academy for Developmental Medicine and Dentistry Pitt Chapter

The American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry (AADMD) was organized in 2002 to provide a forum for healthcare professionals who provide and strive to improve quality of care for people with intellectual disabilities and neurodevelopmental disorders. Here at the SDM, AADMD Pitt Chapter, affectionately known as the Special Needs Club, organizes community service events that allow dental students to share experiences with the special needs community. We hope that these interactions create an understanding of this community to prepare students to face the unique challenges associated with treating patients with special needs.

Our mission:

-Raise awareness of the disparities of care for the special needs population

-Promote inclusion through campaigns, such as “End the ‘R’ Word”

-Provide dental students with meaningful community service experiences with the special needs population, such as Special Olympics Events

Keep an eye out for our upcoming SCOPE lectures, including the “End the ‘R’ Word Campaign,” and feel free to contact our president, Jeff Elmer (jle63@pitt.edu) with any questions!
