March Resident's Corner: Dr. Hays

March 15, 2018

Dr. Bryan Hays is currently in the Endodontic Resident Program here at Pitt. He attended Arizona State University in 2003 for his Bachelor's in Secondary Education Mathematics, and graduated Pitt Dental in 2013. Read on to learn a little bit more about our very own Dr. Hays!

Q: What are the top three things you like about this specialty?

A: I don’t have to look at bitewings and diagnose caries.  I also don’t have to treatment plan!!

I really enjoy not having to convince patients that they need treatment.  Most of the time, they come to us wanting to get out of pain and it is great to be able to provide that service to them.

I like that I’m not “married” to my patients (one and done like all Kentucky basketball players) and if they see me at the store… they don’t recognize me.

Q: Name one thing that you dislike about this specialty.

A: When we send RCT back to the general dentist and they place the build up without a rubber dam…hint hint

Q: What are your plans after residency?

A: I wish I knew...  I will most likely open up my own practice somewhere or get into the education side of dentistry.  I used to be a high school math teacher so I’d like to teach at some point even if I open a practice.

Q: Describe a day in the life of you as a resident.

A: We usually have a class each morning where we discuss literature and cases related to Endo.  The rest of the time we see patients (usually 2-3 per day).  When possible, I try to go up the Trees Hall and play basketball (I really feel like the lunch hour is a waste of my time if I’m not doing something productive)

Q: What helps you to wake up in the morning? Coffee or Tea?

A: I’m Mormon so I don’t drink either.  Most mornings I’m woken up by my kids practicing the piano (no breakfast without practicing)

Q: What do you do for fun outside of work?

A: Most of my time is spent hanging out with my family (wife + 4 kids).\  During the summers that usually consists of wake-boarding! During the winter it consists of running the kids to their many activities.  When on my own, I try to play as much basketball and golf as I can.

Q: Family? Pets? What do you do for lunch at work? What’s your favorite place to go for dinner on the weekend?

A: Wife + 4 kids.  Who needs pets when you have 4 kids….  The place we eat out at the most is Chic fil a…. my favorite is probably Cheesecake Factory

Q: Do you have any hobbies?

A: Golf, basketball, and wakeboarding

Q: If you were to go back to dental school and do something differently, what would it be?

A: I would have used our vacation time between semesters to actually vacation.  Once you graduate and start practicing, vacations are hard to come by.
