Beverly's Birthdays

March 14, 2018

This year’s ASDA 12th Annual Charity Golf Outing will benefit a Pittsburgh organization called Beverly’s Birthdays. This non-profit organization throws birthdays parties for homeless children of Pittsburgh.  The Beverly’s Birthdays founder, Megs Yunn, started the organization in 2011 to fill the need she saw in the Pittsburgh region. The founder's inspiration was a little girl named Beverly, who had told Megs that she had never had a birthday party or her own birthday cake.  Beverly’s Birthdays throws parties (complete with a birthday cake) and gives each child a birthday present and treat bags for their guests.

We are excited to work with Beverly’s Birthdays for the golf outing, and throughout the Spring semester as we hope to become involved with several birthday parties and other SCOPE related events!

Before searching for various organizations in Pittsburgh to serve at through ASDA, I hadn’t considered the children affected by homelessness. I think I always viewed homeless as something we see everyday on Forbes in Oakland and while walking throughout multiple Pittsburgh neighborhoods.  Beverly’s Birthdays really opened my eyes. There is so much more that we don’t see and don’t know about homelessness until we have encounters with people experiencing it. I am really looking forward to joining in with Beverly’s Birthdays and spreading birthday cheer to the homeless children of Pittsburgh. I think that we as a school can make a difference through our support of Beverly’s Birthdays. I hope that lots of you are excited as well!

A little fun fact: each birthday bin that a child receives at his or her birthday celebration contains a new book and a toothbrush & toothpaste. J Last year they served birthday bins to 1,557 children throughout the region…that’s a lot of new toothbrushes and toothpaste given to children in need. If that doesn’t just put a smile on your face!!!
