My journey began almost a decade ago after I chose dentistry as the healthcare field to pursue after shadowing health professionals as part of my high school's curriculum in Ann Arbor, Michigan. My intentions for becoming a doctor is to use medicine to better people’s lives and not to be only another wealthy clinician but have a deeper purpose behind my actions. As I envision life after dental school, I am not certain how my cards will play out but what I know is as long as I can take a step in the right direction, I will be okay.

So that is who I am, someone always questioning what drives us and what we drive—quite literally.

13th Annual Charity
Golf   O
uting

This year, we once again returned to Birdsfoot Golf Course in Freeport, PA to host our annual Charity Golf Outing. We love hosting this event because it allows us to have a great time while supporting a great cause!

This year we teamed up with local charity organization Providence Connections.  Providence Connections is a nonprofit organization which provides childcare and family support services to at-risk youth through afterschool activities and mentorship programs.  Learn more about this organization here http://providenceconnections.org/about-us/

On Choosing the Beneficiary…
Melissa Campbell, class of 2019

The 11th Annual Pitt ASDA Charity Golf Outing was held to benefit the Women's Center and Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh. This is a local non-profit organization in the Pittsburgh area that benefits a wide range of people in the community in which we reside.

The Women's Center and Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh was founded in 1974, and became a leader in the Battered Women's Movement. Their mission is to advance the safety and well-being of victims of intimate partner violence and prevent and respond to intimate partner violence through social change. Not only does this organization support women in our area, but it is open to all domestic victims regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual identity, age, ability, or language spoken. The services provided are, but not limited to, emergency shelters, legal and medical advocacy, a convenient 24-hour hotline, support groups, a children’s program, an education program, and a men's group.

Pitt ASDA had the privilege of choosing the organization in which the donations directly profit. The Women's Center and Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh was an obvious choice for many reasons. We wanted to pick a local charity, so that our golf outing would support our own community. Also, this charity has very impressive numbers in regards to service. In 2016, the Women’s Center and Shelter served 6,000 women and children, accumulated 33,000 service hours, and had 14,710 overnight stays in their shelter. Furthermore, this charity lacks bias, which allows all victims of domestic violence to seek support. Finally, this charity has outstanding accreditations including The United Way Award for Excellence, a four-star charity rating on Charity Navigator, and being accredited by Standards of Excellence (SOE). Through their efforts and accomplishments, it is evident that the Women’s Center and Shelter deserves recognition and support from our ASDA chapter.

ASDA is proud to say that we were able to donate $360 to the Women's Center and Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh. This will only help the charity continue to have a clear mission by focusing on four major areas of healing - justice, autonomy, restoration, and safety - through the many remarkable services they provide. Keep it in the Short Grass!
Davis Mullany, class of 2019

Pitt ASDA was proud to host the 11th Annual Charity Golf Outing on Saturday, June 3rd at Birdsfoot Golf Club in Freeport, Pennsylvania. The competition was a scramble format and featured 16 teams comprised of current dental students, alumni, and faculty from the School of Dental Medicine.
The tournament began at 2 PM with a song played by a bagpipe player, a fitting commencement for Birdsfoot Golf Club, a Scotland-esque links-style golf course lined with fescue and rolling terrain. The sunny day was complimented by equally remarkable scores. The 1st place team, led by first year dental student Stephen Kupniewski and his younger brother Chris Kupniewski, finished at an impressive 15 under par, nearly making birdie on every hole. Finishing 4 strokes higher at 11 under par were the Hawaiian-dressed second year team featuring Davis Mullany, Tom Lacey, Eric Guzak, and Jordan Antetomaso.

The day was also filled with numerous skills competitions, including a Longest Drive, Shortest Drive, and a putting contest. Kevin Kunkel, son of Prosthodontics professor Thomas Kunkel, hit a mammoth drive on hole 16, clinching the Longest Drive award. First year dental student, Kevin Smyth, shamelessly bunted one on hole 7 relinquishing dignity for the Shortest Drive prize. The putting competition started with 20 foot qualifying putt, hit by all competitors in the tournament. Out of the 64 contestants, 5 players managed to hole the 20 foot putt. During the 5 player playoff, Tyler Morehart skillfully navigated the 2 hole course in fewer strokes than his competition.
Amidst the fun and countless birdies scored by the teams, Pitt ASDA raised nearly four hundred dollars for the Women’s Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh. These philanthropic efforts were made possible by our sponsors (see below), participants, and Birdsfoot Golf Club. On behalf of Pitt ASDA, we would like thank everyone for their support and we hope to see you all next year at the 12th Annual Charity Golf Outing. Keep it in the short grass!
